Well, I finally got around to opening up the box full of steering parts today, and I found this.. Yup, that is a bent bearing/cage. It looks like maybe it managed to get smushed under the new steering shaft, but who knows?
I called up Bratton's and explained what happened. They cheerfully sent me a new one, free of charge, shipping included.
